Few natural sights drew more attention in the late 1700s than the cataract on the Niagara River, and this engraving presents it as a sublime wonder for viewers who would never see it firsthand. The record credits Heath with the engraving after a drawing by Metz and names Harrison & Co. as publisher, but the 1783 date is unverified and should be treated with caution. Engraved views like this one helped shape European and American ideas of the falls well before tourist hotels and railways reached the site.
