The Michigan Central and Grand Trunk railway bridges cross the Niagara gorge in this view, carrying rail traffic between the United States and Canada. Crossings like these were major engineering projects, since the deep gorge below the falls made every span a challenge, and the steel structures became part of the working landscape alongside the famous tourist sights. The print is a Detroit Publishing Company view, and the firm's photographers traveled widely to document American scenery and industry for a national market around 1908.
