A low stone wall runs across the foreground of this view of Niagara Falls, dated ca. 1895, setting the cataract back from a lookout above the gorge. The record credits the St. Louis Calcium Light Co., a commercial firm that issued views of popular sights for tourists, though that attribution comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. Visitors had been coming to the falls since the early 1800s, and in 1885 the New York side was set aside as the Niagara Reservation, widely regarded as the first state park in the country. Pictures like this one show how the viewing spots were laid out for sightseers of the period.
