What sets this view apart is its form. The record links it to the St. Louis Calcium Light Co. and to lantern slide cataloging, so it was probably made to be projected rather than handled as a print. Calcium, or limelight, lanterns threw a bright beam through glass slides and were a staple of lectures and traveling shows in the 1890s, and Niagara Falls was among the sights such audiences most often saw. New York had set aside the Niagara Reservation in 1885, the first state park in the country, which helped make the falls a destination. The catalog's caption details are unverified, so the exact maker and date remain open questions.
