Niagara Falls on the New York and Ontario border is the subject here, shown as it looked around 1900, when the cataract drew steady crowds of tourists by rail and steamboat. The record offers little beyond its title and a caption card with catalog tracings, so the picture's maker and exact vantage point are not known. Still, the period is well documented: by then the falls had become one of the country's best-known natural wonders, and photographers sold views of the cascades to visitors who wanted a souvenir of the trip. Images from this era are useful for comparing how the shoreline and surrounding park looked before later engineering changed the scene.
