A railroad station at Falls View, set close to the gorge, let travelers step off the train almost within sight of the cataract, and this photograph captures that setting around 1901. Niagara was then one of the country's most popular destinations, and rail lines carried large numbers of sightseers to its rim. The print is credited to Irving Underhill, a photographer whose views of the falls were widely sold to tourists. The caption data is unverified, so the date should be treated with some caution.
