A panoramic view of Niagara Falls taken from the Michigan Central Railroad sets this print apart from the many close-up falls photographs of the period. Its wide format suggests the scene was meant to be seen as a sweeping vista, the way railroad passengers and sightseers would have taken in the cataract. Around 1896, rail lines carried growing numbers of tourists to the falls, and commercial photographers sold views like this to travelers and collectors. The record's date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
