A group identified as Russian embassy staff, dated June 13, 1922, is recorded on this glass negative, though the title and date come from the National Photo Company's notes on the negative or its sleeve and have not been independently verified. The company was a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed officials, diplomats and public events through the 1910s and 1920s. Viewers should keep in mind that in 1922 the United States had not recognized the Soviet government, so the official status of any Russian diplomatic staff in Washington then was unsettled. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of the original coating, which is common in negatives of this age.
