This view shows National Guard troops at a camp whose name is cut short after the letter S. Its July 17, 1922 date comes from the National Photo Company's own notes on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified. Summer encampments like this were the yearly training period for state Guard units, when citizen soldiers drilled, camped, and practiced field routines. The glass negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and viewers should expect streaks and blemishes, since the original coatings on such plates naturally deteriorate with age.
