Cardinal James Gibbons, archbishop of Baltimore and the most prominent American Catholic prelate of his day, presides over the cornerstone laying for what became the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The 1920 ceremony launched a project backed by American Catholics to build a national church dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the doctrine of her Immaculate Conception, a structure that took decades to finish. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded public life in the capital in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes on the glass negative reflect natural deterioration of its original coatings.
