The ceremony shown here marks the laying of the cornerstone for the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., a church that would grow into one of the largest Roman Catholic churches in the United States. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city and its institutions in the early twentieth century, made the negative, which dates to about 1920. Its glass base was later donated to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes across the image, which come from the gradual breakdown of the original coating on the glass.
