Cardinal James Gibbons, the longtime archbishop of Baltimore and one of the most prominent American Catholic leaders of his era, is the focus of this view of a cornerstone laying at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. The shrine, now the Basilica of the National Shrine, was planned as a national place of Catholic worship and grew slowly over many decades. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented civic and religious events in the early twentieth century, made the negative, and the date of about 1920 is an estimate based on neighboring negatives. Faint streaks and blemishes from the aging glass coating are visible.
