Few details survive about the event itself, but the record ties this scene to a shrine ball game, a kind of community play that often drew crowds to a sacred site and its grounds. The image is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented people and events across the early twentieth century, and its date of about 1921 places it in the years after the First World War. Visitors should note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the gradual breakdown of the original emulsion coatings. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the collection in 1947.
