A visit to Arlington National Cemetery is the subject of this glass negative, which the record attributes to a General Gassouin, though the name is unverified. Arlington had become a place of national remembrance after the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated in 1921, and it drew visiting officers and dignitaries throughout the early 1920s. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that documented the capital's sites and visitors, made the picture, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
