Little is recorded about this sitter beyond his title, General Count Cherep-Spiridovitch, and the July 12, 1921 date written on the negative, which has not been independently verified. The National Photo Company was a commercial studio in Washington that photographed officials, visitors and newsworthy figures in the 1910s and 1920s. In 1921, many former officers of the Russian Imperial Army were living in exile after the revolution and civil war, so a Russian general's presence in the capital fits the period. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration of the original coating, not from the scene itself.
