A bathing beach contest held on June 17, 1922, is the subject of this glass negative. The date comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified. The company worked in Washington, D.C., from the early 1900s into the 1930s, photographing the city's streets, public events, and people, and its plates often record the leisure and fashions of the period. The negative shows streaks and other blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in glass plates of this age. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947.
