Summer bathing at a shoreline or river beach was a popular pastime in the early 1920s, when public swimming areas were expanding across the country and families spent warm weekends in the water. The date of June 12, 1922, places this scene at the start of that season. The glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that photographed everyday American life during the early twentieth century, and its catalog preserves many such views of leisure and public spaces. The record notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of the original coatings, so some marks on the image come from the negative itself.
