Verdun in 1917 sat at the center of one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the First World War. The German offensive that began on February 21, 1916, aimed to bleed the French army white, and by 1917 the fighting had settled into a grinding stalemate across the ridges and ravines of the Meuse hills. The town itself had been shelled for more than a year, its cathedral and many houses damaged, and its civilian population had largely been evacuated. French forces held the right bank of the Meuse, and the ruined city served as a supply and staging point for troops rotating through the surrounding trenches and forts. Residents and soldiers alike would have known the place less as a town than as a symbol of French endurance.
