Four men stand together in this January 1909 portrait of the National Baseball Commission, the body that oversaw relations between the National and American leagues. From left to right are Harry Pulliam, president of the National League; August Hermann, owner of the Cincinnati Reds and the commission's chairman; Ban Johnson, president of the American League; and John E. Bruce, the commission's secretary. The commission was created under the National Agreement of 1903 to settle disputes between the two leagues. The photograph comes from George Grantham Bain's collection of news photographs, which recorded prominent figures of the era.
