Jorge Pasquel, shown on the left, led the Mexican Professional Baseball League, and this 1946 photograph catches him and his brother Bernardo at a table going through their correspondence in Mexico City. The brothers were well known that year for their aggressive campaign to recruit players from the United States, including stars from the Negro leagues such as Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson, by offering salaries well above what they could earn at home. Their spending reshaped Mexican baseball and drew sharp reaction from American team owners, making the pair a notable figure in the sport's history.
