Among the Civil War battle scenes on this board, this chromolithograph depicts the fighting at Shiloh, in southwestern Tennessee, where Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant were nearly overrun on April 6, 1862, before a counterattack the next day. The battle was among the bloodiest of the war to that point, and its casualties shocked the North. The print reproduces a painting by Thure de Thulstrup, a Swedish-born artist known for battle scenes, and was issued by L. Prang & Co. of Boston, a firm that produced color prints for a wide public. The catalog record also lists Gettysburg as a subject, which may reflect how the publisher grouped its battle images.
