This Polish theatrical poster advertises Eugène Ionesco's *Rhinoceros* (*Nosorożec*), the 1959 absurdist play in which the people of a provincial town turn, one by one, into rhinoceroses. The poster is credited to the designer Tomaszewski and dates from 1961, when Polish poster artists were producing some of the most inventive graphic work in Europe. theater posters from this period often relied on bold color and symbolic rather than literal imagery, a style that suited Ionesco's play about conformity and the spread of mass thinking. The poster also shows how Polish designers adapted Western avant-garde drama for local audiences.
