This color poster advertises *Marysia i Napoleon*, Andrzej Jarecki's play about the Polish countess Maria Walewska and her relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte, staged at the Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw. Its designer, Tomaszewski, was one of the leading figures of the Polish School of Poster Art, which flourished in the 1950s and 1960s and used bold graphic ideas to draw attention on crowded city streets. Theater posters from this period often relied on symbol and wit rather than literal illustration, and they were widely admired abroad. The print dates to 1964, a time when Polish poster design was gaining international recognition.
