The title places this scene at Gojō in Kyoto, and the subjects are bamboo and rickshaws, so the picture pairs a plant that is everywhere in Japanese life with a vehicle that was then new to city streets. Rickshaws, or jinrikisha, appeared in Japan around 1869 and became a common sight in cities like Kyoto by the 1890s. Hand-colored photographs of this kind were often produced by Japanese studios for Western travelers, who bought them as souvenirs of Japan's crafts and street life. The date is uncertain, but the record places the print between 1890 and 1910.
