Among Polish theater posters of the 1970s, this one stands out for its unsettling imagery of eyes and legs, the two subjects its record lists. It advertises a 1975 production of Witold Gombrowicz's play *Ślub* (*The Marriage*) by the Teatr Polski in Wrocław, designed by Franciszek von Bartels Starowieyski, a painter and poster artist known for dreamlike, surreal compositions. Gombrowicz wrote the play in 1953 as a satire of Polish social pretensions and its rituals of class and courtship, and posters like this one were a key way Polish theatres drew audiences during the decade.
