The lettering announces *USA baut*, an exhibition of American architecture at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zürich from 9 September to 7 October 1945, and the poster is signed "Bill '45," the mark of the Swiss designer Max Bill. A show about American building in Switzerland just months after the war ended in Europe was a notable choice, since many Swiss had seen little of the United States beyond news reports. Printed by the Zürich reproduction firm L. Speich, the poster reflects the clean, geometric approach of Swiss graphic design in the mid-1940s, a style Bill helped shape.
