The hill in this drawing is where Gen. Stephen H. Weed was killed, a spot the soldiers called the Slaughter Pen, according to the inscription below the image. Alfred R. Waud, a battlefield artist who sent sketches to illustrated newspapers, worked in pencil and Chinese white on olive paper, which gives the scene a soft, muted tone. The inscription also notes a ravine from which Confederate troops were driven by the Third Corps, a reminder of how the fighting on July 2 moved back and forth across these slopes.
