Few spots on the Gettysburg field are as closely tied to a single officer's decisions as Little Round Top, the rocky hill this pencil drawing sets at its center. On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, Gouverneur Kemble Warren, a topographical engineer on Gen. George Meade's staff, noticed that the hill was unoccupied while Confederate troops were advancing against the Union left. His push to get soldiers onto the summit helped hold the position that anchored the Union line that day. The sketch is drawn in pencil on thin yellow tracing paper, and its loose, quick lines suggest a working drawing made on the ground rather than a studio portrait.
