Its inscription places the scene on the afternoon of Friday, July 3, 1863, the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg, showing Union troops of the First Corps behind breastworks on a ridge crest as Confederates charge across open ground. The attack is named as Longstreet's, the assault that ended in the failed Pickett's Charge against the Union center. The inscription also notes heavy white smoke rising from both lines, a reminder of how much powder the fighting burned. The sketch came to the Library of Congress as a gift from J.P. Morgan in 1919.
