A pencil sketch marked with the initials "EF" and dated July 3, 1863, this drawing is tied to the third and final day of fighting at Gettysburg. That afternoon, Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee sent a massed infantry assault against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, and its failure ended Lee's invasion of the North. Sketches made in the field or soon after the fighting often recorded terrain and troop movements that the photographers of the day could not easily capture. The sheet entered the Library of Congress as a 1919 gift from J.P. Morgan and was reproduced in a 1975 selection from the Library's pictorial holdings.
