This 1878 view shows New Tacoma as its boosters hoped outsiders would see it: a street grid and waterfront set against the snowy bulk of Mount Rainier. The Northern Pacific Railroad chose the site as its western terminus in the early 1870s, and the company's investment drove the town's rapid growth. Bird's eye views like this one, drawn from an imagined high vantage point, were a popular way to advertise such settlements to investors and new residents. Washington was still a territory when the picture was made, and it would not become a state until 1889.
