Milwaukee's three rivers meeting at the edge of Lake Michigan give this 1898 bird's eye view its shape, with the city's streets and waterfront laid out as though seen from a high oblique angle. Maps like this were popular in the late 1800s, when rapid growth made cities worth showing as a whole. Milwaukee was then a major center of brewing, tanning, and heavy manufacturing, and the ground-level detail of its mills, rail lines, and neighborhoods reflects that industrial expansion. Look closely at the rivers and harbor, which explain why the city developed where it did.
