This 1891 bird's-eye view shows Salt Lake City from an elevated vantage point, with the Wasatch Range rising to the east and the Great Salt Lake lying to the west. The city's street grid dates to 1847, when Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young laid out wide streets and large blocks around the Temple Block. By 1891 Utah was still a territory, and the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 had brought new industry, mining wealth, and population growth. Bird's-eye views like this one were popular with city boosters and residents who wanted to see their town as a whole.
