This 1878 view shows Seattle as a young lumber town on the edge of Elliott Bay, seen from a high, angled vantage point that lets the viewer take in streets, waterfront and surrounding hills at once. The town was then part of Washington Territory and still small, with its economy tied to sawmills and the timber trade, including the waterfront operations that grew out of Henry Yesler's mill on Yesler Way. Bird's-eye views like this one were popular in the late 1800s because they promised a complete picture of a growing place, and today they are valued for showing how the layout of early Seattle was built along the water.
