Providence, the capital of Rhode Island, sits at the head of Narragansett Bay, and this 1895 bird's eye view shows the city from above at the height of its industrial growth. Roger Williams founded the settlement in 1636, and by the 1890s its jewelry, textile and machinery works had made it one of the busiest manufacturing centers in New England. Maps like this were drawn from an imagined vantage point high above the streets, so they reward close study: rooftops, rail lines, church spires and the campus of Brown University on College Hill can all be traced.
