Ambrose Powell Hill, the Confederate general whose life spans the dates printed in this portrait's title, is shown here in a steel engraving by A.H. Ritchie. Hill rose to lead the Light Division of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and fought at Gettysburg, where his troops joined the first major fighting on July 1, 1863. He was killed near Petersburg, Virginia, in April 1865, only days before the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. The caption card carries no date for this engraving, so it is best read as a later likeness made from the general's reputation rather than from a sitting.
