Robert E. Lee, the Confederate commander whose army fought at Gettysburg, is the subject of this portrait, made by Mathew Brady on a wet collodion glass negative. The catalog gives 1864 as the date, while the title reads April 1865, and the notes say the title came from an unverified sleeve, so the exact sitting remains uncertain. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, which explains why the later date appears in the title. Brady was the war's best-known portrait photographer, and the wet collodion process required sitters to hold still through a long exposure.
