A stone monument topped with statues rises from a grassy hill beneath a clear blue sky, the kind of memorial that dots the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania. Such markers were raised mostly by state governments, regimental veterans' groups and private donors in the decades after the battle of July 1863, often on the ground where particular units had fought. Many were carved to show soldiers in action or at rest, and their placement on high ground reflects how the land itself was read as part of the story. The Gettysburg National Military Park, established in 1895, later took responsibility for preserving and maintaining them.
