Stone walls like the one in this view were a defining feature of the Gettysburg battlefield, where farmers had built them over the decades to mark fields and pasture lines. During the fighting of July 1-3, 1863, the low walls and fences gave soldiers on both sides cover that could mean the difference between holding a position and being overrun. Many of these walls still run through the woods and hillsides today, and they remain some of the most recognizable reminders of how the terrain shaped the battle.
