Shafts of sunlight break through a heavy cloud layer and fall across a wooded countryside, the kind of dramatic sky that landscape photographers of the early twentieth century prized. The setting is the rolling farmland and woodlots of south-central Pennsylvania, where Gettysburg sits, and the Gettysburg battlefield's fields and tree lines drew many pictorial views after the 1863 battle. Because the record gives little detail beyond its title and collection, the photographer and exact date are unknown. Still, the picture shows how the region's scenery was framed for visitors who came to see it.
