Drawn on the same day as the assault it anticipates, this sheet shows the ground around Cemetery Hill before Pickett's charge, the Confederate attack that broke against the Union center on July 3, 1863. The artist, Greenleaf T. Stevens, served with the 5th Battery of the 1st Maine Light Artillery, a unit that fought on the Union line that afternoon. He worked in pencil and Chinese white, an opaque pigment, on green paper, which gives the scene a muted, field-sketch quality. A soldier's view of the terrain, recorded in the hours before the fighting, shows the ground that the gunners were about to defend.
