Cemetery Hill rises just south of the town of Gettysburg, and this 1909 view records it as it looked more than forty years after the battle fought there in July 1863. The hill was a key position on the first day of the fighting, when Union troops held its crest and the ground around it became a stronghold for the final defense of the Union line. By 1909, the old battlefield had become a place of memory, with monuments, markers and carefully kept grounds drawing veterans and visitors. The picture shows the hill in the quiet, orderly condition that marked the battlefield's early preservation years.
