The Gateway of Cemetery, Gettysburg, is a stone-and-iron entrance to the cemetery laid out on Cemetery Hill, the high ground that anchored the Union line on the second day of the battle in July 1863. Its location matters: the Union right and center held here as Confederate attacks came up the slopes. Gateways like this one were built as the grounds were consecrated and the dead of the battle were gathered into permanent burial plots, so the structure marks the shift from battlefield to memorial.
