The gateway in question stands at the entrance to Gettysburg's national cemetery, laid out on Cemetery Hill in the months after the battle of July 1 to 3, 1863. Its stone arch and iron gates mark the threshold of ground that became the final resting place for Union soldiers killed in the fighting, many of whom were reinterred here from scattered battlefield graves. The cemetery was dedicated in November 1863, when Abraham Lincoln delivered the address now known as the Gettysburg Address. Because the board places this view under Day 2 and Cemetery Hill, it helps connect the gate to the ridge where Union forces held firm during the evening fighting of July 2.
