From a walkway near the top of the pedestal, this view turns the camera toward the statue itself, a vantage few visitors would have had. It is one plate in Jeannette Griffith's album *Photographic Studies of the Bartholdi Statue of Liberty*, which the record dates to about 1938, though that date comes from an unverified caption card. The statue, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886, was a gift from France, and its copper skin rests on an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm. Studies like this one show the monument's enormous scale from angles most tourists never reached.
