Washington Park, on Chicago's South Side, was one of the city's large formal parks in 1907, and the conservatory shown here stood among its plantings and walks. By then Chicago was a major rail and meatpacking center, with the Union Stock Yards and a dense web of freight lines drawing workers from across Europe and the rural Midwest. The city had passed 1.6 million residents by 1900, and its park system was a point of civic pride, with the grounds used for public gatherings, concerts, and summer leisure. South Side neighborhoods around the park were growing quickly, and families moving into them often relied on the parks as their main green space. A few years earlier, the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in nearby Jackson Park had drawn attention to the city's ambitions, and the South Side parks still carried that influence in their design.
