South Battery Street runs along the water's edge at the tip of Charleston's peninsula, where a row of tall, piazza-fronted houses looks out over the harbor. This stereograph is number 27 in a series of Charleston views issued in the decades after the Civil War, when photographers sold stereo pairs to visitors who wanted to see the city's famous architecture in three dimensions. The Battery's houses, built largely in the decades before the war, survived the 1861 to 1865 conflict and the 1886 earthquake with relatively little damage, which made the street a favorite subject for travelers. The record dates the card only to between 1870 and 1920, so its exact year remains uncertain.
