Jay Cooke & Company's office on Wall Street is the focus of this wood engraving, which *Harper's Weekly* ran on October 11, 1873. The banking house had been one of the most powerful financiers of the Civil War bond sales and a leading backer of the Northern Pacific Railroad, so its collapse in September 1873 shook confidence across the country. The firm's failure set off a financial panic that closed the New York Stock Exchange for about ten days and spread into a longer economic depression. The scene captures the crowds and anxiety of the street during those weeks.
