A street named Wall in Norwalk, Connecticut, carries the name of its far more famous New York namesake, and that small coincidence is one of the few particulars the caption card gives us. Norwalk grew up around its harbor on Long Island Sound, where shipping, oystering, and later manufacturing shaped the town's streets and buildings. The card records no date or photographer, so the scene is best read as part of the Wittemann Collection's wider view of American towns in the early twentieth century, when photographers often documented ordinary streetscapes like this one.
