Depositors pressing toward the doors is the scene that sets this view apart: the title names a run on the Union Trust Company, a Wall Street institution overwhelmed in the autumn of 1873. The failure followed the collapse of Jay Cooke & Company that September, which set off a financial panic and led the New York Stock Exchange to close for about ten days. *Harper's Weekly*, which relied on wood engravings to show readers current events, published the scene in its October 11 issue. It is a useful record of how ordinary savers and brokers reacted in the street when confidence in banks suddenly disappeared.
